京都市北西部で約600年前の室町時代ごろから栽培される銘木。
製品は「北山丸太(きたやままるた)」と呼ばれ、磨き上げられた丸太の木のはだの美しさは独特の味わいがあります。節がなく真っ直ぐに伸びた丸太が特徴です。京都府の木として、 昭和41年に制定されました。鹿苑寺(金閣寺)等の有名建築物にも使用され、川端康成「古都」中でも語られています。

KITAYAMA Cedar
Origin: Kyoto Prefecture
A prized timber cultivated in the northwestern part of Kyoto City since the Muromachi period (approximately 600 years ago).
The finished products are known as “Kitayama Maruta” (Kitayama logs); the beauty of their polished bark possesses a unique, distinctive charm. These logs are characterized by their straight growth and lack of knots. The species was designated as the official tree of Kyoto Prefecture in 1966. It has been used in famous structures such as Rokuon-ji (Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion) and is featured in Yasunari Kawabata’s novel *The Old Capital* (*Koto*).
