SANUKINOKUNI Sakura
SANUKINOKUNI Sakura
Origin: Kagawa Prefecture
Kagawa Prefecture is home to many famous cherry blossom viewing spots, such as Ritsurin Garden, Shiudeyama, and Marugame Castle.
In the past, Kagawa was known as Sanuki Province and is the birthplace of Kōbō Daishi Kukai.
Because Sanuki has few rivers and low rainfall, the land was not suitable for rice cultivation. As a result, a wheat-based food culture developed, and this is one of the reasons udon became the region’s specialty. It is said that Kukai also devoted himself to restoring “Manno Pond,” one of Japan’s largest irrigation reservoirs.
Cherry trees thrive in places with long hours of sunlight and good drainage, making Kagawa—known for both—an ideal environment for this distinguished wood.
Meaning: smile, purity, nobility, beauty
