ECHIGONOKUNI Japanese Snow Camelia

Origin: Niigata Prefecture (Prefectural Tree)

This camellia is native to Japan and well adapted to snowy climates. It is a wild species designated as the prefectural tree of Niigata. Its roots spread close to the ground, allowing it to withstand the weight of heavy snow — a distinctive feature of this variety. From April to May, it produces beautiful red flowers. The Yuki-tsubaki (snow camellia) is also believed to have medicinal properties.

In ancient times, the Echigo region was known as Koshi-no-Kuni, a land beyond the rule of the Yamato court. Under the Ritsuryō system, it became known as Echigo Province, but the border with the Emishi — people who did not submit to the Yamato authority — remained fortified. These fortifications continued until the late 8th to early 9th century, when Sakanoue no Tamuramaro finally subdued Aterui.
