越前杉（エチゼンスギ）
産地；福井県
福井県の一部は旧地名「越前国」といわれていました。福井県は日本海側に属しながら豪雪地帯でありながらも温暖湿潤気候という杉の生育に適した地域です。越前福井藩や鯖江藩は杉を年貢の代替え品として使われ藩財政を支える重要な資源でした。治山治水政策の一環としても推進され杉が植えられました。
越前町には「千足杉」という巨木があり、旅人や交通安全の守り神の樹として信仰の対象になっています。越前杉にはセスキテルペン類が含まれ抗菌性や抗酸化が認められるといわれています。

ECHIZEN Cedar
Origin: Fukui Prefecture
Part of Fukui Prefecture was historically called Echizen Province. Although Fukui lies on the Sea of Japan and experiences heavy snowfall, it has a temperate and humid climate suitable for cedar growth. The Echizen-Fukui Domain and the Sabae Domain used cedar as a substitute for tax payments, making it an important resource that supported the domains’ finances. Planting cedar was also promoted as part of erosion control and water management policies.
In Echizen Town, there is a giant cedar called the Senzoku-sugi, which has been revered as a sacred tree protecting travelers and ensuring traffic safety. Echizen cedar contains sesquiterpenes, which are said to have antibacterial and antioxidant properties.
