長野県 NAGANO

SHINSHU Japanese white birch

Origin: Nagano Prefecture (Prefectural Tree)

Belonging to the birch family (Betulaceae), white birch (Betula platyphylla) is a deciduous tall tree. Nagano Prefecture, home to the Shirakaba Plateau, is known for its clusters of white birch trees. The area, including Karuizawa, is also famous as a summer resort that has been frequented by foreign missionaries and cultural figures since the Meiji era.

White birch has a relatively short lifespan of about 80 years. Because it is soft and easy to process, it is often used in handicrafts. Its components are said to have beautifying and antibacterial effects, offering rare benefits such as moisturizing, deodorizing, and promoting blood circulation. Due to its high oil content, it also has waterproofing properties and is used for roofing and as kindling. Although not as sweet as maple syrup, it can produce a slightly smoky syrup.
