BUNGO Japanese Cedar
Origin: Oita Prefecture
Bungo Sugi is a flagship timber brand representing Oita Prefecture. It features dense growth rings, a deep reddish color, and excellent strength, durability, and workability, making it highly valued as a construction material. During the Edo period, it was actively planted, and some areas were placed under direct control of the shogunate.
The timber was transported to Edo and Osaka via the Bungo Highway and the Chikugo River waterway using raft-floating methods.
It is said to have a strong fragrance, high antibacterial properties, and excellent resistance to drying.
Bungo is also a region rich in spiritual traditions, home to Usa Jingu, the head shrine of all Hachiman worship across Japan. It is also known for its deep religious history, as the Christian daimyo Ōtomo Sōrin promoted Christianity in the area.
