愛媛県はかつて伊予国と呼ばれていました。名前の由来はハッキリわかっておらず湧き水のことを湧水（いゆ）と呼んだという説が有力です。湧き水を神聖視されていたことから、神聖な湧き水が沸く場所としてされていたそうです。伊予国は古事記にすでに登場する地名で、伊邪那岐命（イザナギ）と伊邪那美命（イザナミ）が国生み神話の中の第二の島「伊予之二名島（いよのふたなのしま）の場面に登場します。そして、その伊予国には
「愛比売（えひめ）」という女神が住んでいたと記述が残っており、その女神の名前がそのまま名付けられたという珍しい県です。「比売（ひめ）」は女性を表し「愛（え）」は「愛らしい」「美しい」という意味を持っています。松は沿岸部に防砂林として愛媛県では植えられ、松山市と市にも名付けられるほどのアイデンティティを持たれています。愛媛県の県木は「松」で「あかまつ」「くろまつ」「ごようまつ」の3種が対象となっています。

EHIME Japanese Red Pine
Origin: Ehime Prefecture (Prefectural tree)
Ehime Prefecture was once known as Iyo Province. The exact origin of the name is unclear, but a strong theory suggests it comes from iyu, meaning “spring water.” Because spring water was considered sacred, the area was regarded as a place where holy waters welled forth. Iyo appears as a place name in the Kojiki, where the deities Izanagi and Izanami create the second island in the nation-birth myth, Iyo-no-Futana-no-Shima. It is recorded that a goddess named Ehime lived in this land, and unusually, the prefecture was named directly after her. “Hime” refers to a woman, and “E” conveys meanings such as “lovely” or “beautiful.”
In Ehime, red pine trees have long been planted along coastal areas as windbreak and sand-control forests. Pine trees carry strong local identity, to the extent that even the city name Matsuyama (“pine mountain”) reflects it. The prefectural tree of Ehime is “pine,” including the three varieties: red pine (akamatsu), black pine (kuromatsu), and Japanese white pine (goyoumatsu).
