Yakusugi (Yakushima Cedar)
屋久杉
産地；屋久島
樹齢1000年以上の杉だけを屋久杉と呼び、1000年以下の杉を小杉と区別しています。
屋久杉は、標高にして600m以上から1300mくらいの所に多く自生し、1200m前後に巨大杉が多く見られます。
世界遺産登録に際しても、日本の自然景観の重要な要素であり、固有植物である杉のすぐれた生育地と評価されています。
太古の森で、脈々と受け継がれてきた強い生命力、そして聖地である屋久島に宿る清らかなエネルギーを持つといわれています。
古くから信仰の対象であった奥山に育つ屋久杉を伐採することはありませんでした。
しかし、島津氏が強大になり、さらに天下統一がすすめられる時代になると、特別な建築のために屋久杉が伐採されるようになりました。
また、秀吉の京都方広寺の建築材を調達するため、島津氏の重臣が調査に来島した記録も残されています。

Only cedars that are more than 1,000 years old are called Yakusugi, and cedars less than 1000 years old are distinguished and are called Kosugi.
Yakusugi grows from 600m to 1300m high. The most amounts of huge cedars are around 1200m high.
Yakushima is an ancient forest with strong vitality that has been ingested from generation to generation, and it is said to be a holy place that have pure energy that dwells on it.
Yakusugi, which grows in Okuyama, which has been the object of worship since ancient times, was never cut down. However, when Mr. Shimazu became powerful and the unification of the world was promoted, Yakusugi was cut down for a special construction.
There is also a record that Mr. Shimazu’s senior vassal visited the island to procure building materials for Hideyoshi’s Kyoto Hokoji Temple.
