SHIMOTSUKENOKUNI Sawara cypress
Origin: Tochigi Prefecture
An evergreen conifer belonging to the cypress family (Cupressaceae). It is a rare type of wood with limited distribution. Subtle and elegant in appearance, it has a strong fragrance and low resin content. Despite being easy to work with, it is durable, smooth to the touch, and highly resistant to water, making it a prized material for bathtubs and wooden tubs—deeply connected to Japan’s hot spring culture. Tochigi Prefecture was once known as “Shimotsuke no Kuni,” and the famous Nikko Toshogu Shrine is located there. Nikko holds great importance in both feng shui and geopolitics, situated at the heart between eastern and western Japan. In medieval times, it was also an important center of samurai culture.
